PROVENANCE
From an Important Private Collection, Mumbai

The renunciation of Mahavir is one of the most important events in the Kalpasutra. In this beautiful manuscript page Mahavir has just arrived in the forest and is now seated opposite Shakra or Indra. He surrenders his royal attire and jewels and plucks out a tuft of his own hair as a symbol of embarking on a path of renunciation. Shakra in turn receives the hair in a diamond urn as a sign of acceptance. This emotional moment is well-captured in this painting. A very similar example can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum. The Museum example is in immaculate condition but the finesse, details and expressions when compared appear superior in the present lot.
